Let’s Talk Spiritual Awakening!

I simply cannot have a blog without discussing spiritual awakening, its so common yet so misunderstood!

Let’s start by saying it’s not something that just happens to hippy spiritual people who love tye dye and crystals. Spiritual awakening is when your mind, body and soul align and you wake up to the truth that there is far more in the world than we see with our physical eyes!

Unfortunately, spiritual awakening is commonly both physically and emotionally painful and many people, unaware of what is happening, block the process and remain ‘asleep’ OR go through it alone thinking that they are unwell, going mad and believing they’re alone in this.

It is my mission to help people through this process, to make sure no one ever has to awaken alone again and for you to know you are NOT weird, you are not imagining things and you are going to be ok … better than ok, being awakened is the most amazing feeling in the world!

I’m going to share the common signs/symptoms of an awakening – some will only experience some of these and some will read this lists say yes yes yes yes!!! Awakening is a very individual process, it’s not one size fits all!

  • Craving Purpose

You start craving for meaning and purpose, you have no idea what your life purpose is or the meaning of life but you suddenly have a sense that there must be more to it all.

This can lead you to believing that your life is a lie. Everything that you have believed, built, and worked towards seems false. You don’t feel like yourself and don’t enjoy the things that previously gave you joy and satisfaction. It can feel like something is missing.

  • Questioning

One of the first signs of awakening is starting to questing things that you have always done, things that are second nature and you do on auto pilot suddenly come to the forefront of your mind. Questions you may be asking yourself could be:

  • Why don’t I speak up when I disagree?
  • Why am I quick to temper?
  • Why do I eat meat?
  • Do I need to drink so much caffeine?
  • Why do I stay in the background?
  • Why do I allow people to hurt me?

Starting to ask yourself questions brings awareness to the situation which in turn presents opportunities to change.

  • Letting Go of Ego

We all have an ego, some have an under inflated ego, some balanced and some over inflated.

The thing with ego is that it can be very powerful when harnessed and is not something you should ever be ashamed of having, however an under or over inflated ego will be a huge hurdle in achieving your true potential.

Ego may cause you to define yourself by the car you drive, the shoes you wear, the supermarket you use, who you spend time with, what you read, and how you spend your money.

The thing with ego is that it is affected by so many outside factors, take me, for years I had an over inflated ego, I started my career in an environment that teased your ego, that encouraged big egos fighting it out to the top of the target board .. such is advertising sales! You were celebrated for being the best which only fed the belief its important to do better than others! This is common in the work place but it’s also affected by many other factors, family expectations, success at a young age, peer influence, the TV shows you watch, books you read, music you listen too etc etc

To balance your ego you have to learn who you truly are, strip away the inner voice that tells you that you’re the smartest – or not smart enough, the belief that you are superior OR inferior to others and see what you are really left with. For me this was the most difficult part of my awakening – I wore my ego as a shield and removing it meant a period of intense healing.

  • Feeling at one with others

This oneness may present in many ways but in any awakening it will appear, it’s impossible to remove the filter you have lived behind and not see the world differently.

Common ways of oneness appearing in your life are:
Becoming more charitable.
Feeling emotional when you witness gestures of kindness
Feeling compelled to help people
Feeling intrigued by other cultures, religions and belief systems.
Judging less.

Turning vegetarian or vegan is very common, or you might stop to feel gratitude for the sacrifice before eating animals and become very conscious of wasting food.

You may suddenly feel drawn to protect the planet. This could be a need to recycle, adopting an eco-lifestyle or actively protesting for change, it often comes as a compulsion that you simply cannot ignore.

  • Hurting

People often talk about how painful it can be to awaken, for many people this is true, the pain is most often all the wounds of the past coming up to allow you to truly heal and release them.

Now whilst this sounds like a great thing, imagine you don’t actually know you are awakening, you are not aware that the most beautiful experience is waiting for you on the other side of this dark tunnel so you stop dead in your tracks and you burrow down in the pain. Anxiety, Depression and Physical Pain that is often diagnosed as a chronic illness such as fibromyalgia, FND, Arthritis etc is likely to occur at this stage – Invisible illnesses are extremely common in spiritually awakening. This is a very scary and lonely place to be.

My mission is to find these people and help them to understand their pain and help them heal so that they can move through the tunnel and come back into the light.

It is common at this stage to reach a point a desperation that leads you to holistic therapies and spiritual healing – this is exactly what your soul needs as it’s the holistic therapists and spiritual workers who will recognise the signs and support you through your awakening.

  • ‘Just Knowing’

Thinking about people and then bumping into them, knowing who is calling your phone before you look at the screen, knowing a friend or family member is upset or struggling before they actually tell you.

‘Just Knowing’ is you tapping into your intuition and it can tell you many things, who to trust, what to release, which path to take, when to push through and when to rest etc The difficult part isn’t tuning in to it, its trusting it!

  • Spotting the signs

This follows intuition – once you become aware of your intuition the universe/spirit/source whatever you want to call it, will align and the signs will be there!

When you don’t trust your intuition you’ll likely miss the signs too, putting them down to coincidence or just being completely unware however they will come back to you again and again until you take notice.

From my first sign to actually acknowledging and acting on the fact I was supposed to be a healer was a time span of 5/6 years – if its meant to be it will keep coming up but the sooner you do it the less painful/frustrating the process will be!

  • A strong sense of self

With an awakening comes confidence and a deep sense of self-worth. You will start to care less about what people around you and society think you should be/do and instead step into your own.

You will likely realise you have always been this way but you have suppressed many parts of yourself to conform to the standards you feel were expected of you.

Authentic people don’t chase followers or fans, they don’t need approval or validating for they know they are exactly who they were meant to be, doing exactly what they were meant to do.

  • Shredding

Awakening means seeing the world with new eyes, which ultimately means seeing the truth. Sadly, in life we form relationships that do not serve us, we pick up bad habits, make choices based on ego and chase status instead of happiness. When we ‘wake up’ we see things for what they truly are and this often leads to a process of shredding anything from our lives that doesn’t align with our core values.

I lost friendships, family members, my career, my car, my home, lots of material possessions and wondered at times if this was really a good thing BUT I’m awakened now and I have more friends than I’ve ever had, the best job in the world, a car I love, a beautiful home and my life is filled with love and gratitude.

  • Unconditional Love

As your barriers breakdown you begin to love other people without expectations or conditions, you feel almost repelled by conflict, drama and hate and long for a world where kindness and love comes naturally.

This can be both a blessing and a hardship until you learn to manage it.

So without exhausting the list you can see that spiritually awakening is no easy fete!
